Title: Associate Professor
Aleksandar Jovanovic, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Kragujevac’s Faculty of Engineering in Serbia and a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering. He earned his PhD in Operations Research in Urban Transportation from the University of Belgrade in 2017, where he also completed his MSc and BSc in Traffic Engineering and Urban Transportation, respectively. He was born in Belgrade in 1987.
Dr. Jovanovic has extensive teaching experience, instructing courses such as Traffic Control Systems, Traffic Management and Operations, Urban Transportation, and Informatics in Traffic Engineering at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has supervised multiple undergraduate and graduate students, including PhD candidates.
His research focuses on traffic signal control, urban transportation, and the application of artificial intelligence in traffic management. He has authored several manuscripts and published numerous refereed journal papers in reputable journals like Expert Systems with Applications and Transportation Research Part C.
Dr. Jovanovic has been involved in various projects, serving as Principal Investigator on initiatives funded by the Ministry of Science and Technological Development in Serbia and the Pittsburgh Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab. He has received awards including a professional development award for a poster presentation and a best paper award at an international conference.
His technical skills include proficiency in traffic simulation software (PTV Vissim, HCS, Synchro, SUMO), design tools (AutoCAD), and scripting languages (Matlab, Python). Outside academia, he is an avid chess player with a highest FIDE rating of 1912.
